Clock size guide

The most common regret with a wall clock is buying one too small. Here is how to get the diameter right the first time.

Start with the wall, not the clock

Measure the clear width of the wall or the furniture the clock sits above. As a starting point, a wall clock looks right at roughly one half to two thirds the width of what is beneath it — a sofa, a sideboard, a mantel.

Above a 72-inch sofa, that puts you between 36 and 48 inches of visual width. A single clock rarely needs to fill all of it, but a 12-inch clock stranded on that wall will look like an afterthought.

Then check the reading distance

You read it from Diameter that works
Up to 6 ft — a desk, a nightstand 4–8 in
6–12 ft — a kitchen, a small office 10–14 in
12–20 ft — a living room, a landing 15–20 in
20–35 ft — an open plan room, a hall 21–29 in
Over 35 ft — a double-height wall, a workshop 30 in and over

Hanging height

Centre the clock about 7 to 8 feet from the floor in a room you stand in, or roughly 8 to 12 inches above whatever furniture it sits over. In a stairwell, hang it to be read from the landing rather than the bottom step.

Numerals or none

A clock with full numerals reads faster than one with bare markers, and the gap widens with distance. If you are hanging something above 20 feet away, numerals are worth the visual noise.

Silent or ticking

A standard quartz movement steps once a second and makes an audible tick in a quiet room. A sweep movement moves continuously and is effectively silent. For a bedroom, nursery or a home office you record in, filter the shop by Movement: Silent sweep.

Desk and table clocks

These are read from a few feet away, so anything from 4 to 8 inches is plenty. The thing to check instead is depth — a mantel clock with a pendulum needs the shelf to be deep enough that the case is not overhanging.

Every listing on this site states the real diameter. If a measurement you need is not on the page, email support@voncher.com and we will measure the stock.
