Atomic clocks explained (they are not radioactive)

The word “atomic” on a wall clock is doing something slightly misleading. There is no atomic timekeeping element inside it. What is inside is an ordinary quartz movement plus a small radio receiver, and the receiver is listening to an atomic clock several hundred miles away.

Where the signal comes from

In the United States the signal is WWVB, broadcast at 60 kHz from a transmitter near Fort Collins, Colorado, and derived from the caesium clock ensemble at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Sixty kilohertz is very low frequency, which is exactly why it is used: those wavelengths follow the curvature of the earth and pass through walls that would stop a Wi-Fi signal instantly.

What your clock actually does

It does not listen continuously. A typical radio-controlled clock wakes its receiver once or twice in the small hours, spends a few minutes decoding the time code, corrects itself, and goes back to running on quartz for the rest of the day. That is why a clock that has drifted a few seconds will often be exactly right again by morning without you touching it.

It also handles daylight saving on its own, which is the feature most people actually buy it for.

Why yours is not syncing

Almost every failed sync comes down to one of five things.

  • It is too soon. A new clock can take up to 24 hours to catch its first signal. Set the time zone, then leave it overnight.
  • It is in the wrong part of the house. Reception is best near an exterior wall and worst in a basement, a steel-framed building, or a room with foil-backed insulation.
  • Something is generating interference. Televisions, computer monitors, LED drivers, fluorescent ballasts, solar inverters and cheap phone chargers all radiate noise in the low-frequency range. Move the clock a few feet from anything with a power supply and try again.
  • Orientation. The receiver uses a ferrite rod antenna, which is directional. Turning the clock so its face points toward or away from Colorado — rather than edge-on — can be the difference.
  • Distance. Reliable coverage weakens toward Alaska, Hawaii and the far northeast. Overnight reception is better than daytime everywhere, because the signal propagates further after dark.

What it will not fix

A radio-controlled clock still needs a good battery. If the cell is weak, the receiver is the first thing to stop working — the movement will keep running while quietly failing to sync, which looks like a broken radio and is actually a flat battery.

Is it worth it?

If you have a clock somewhere awkward to reach, or you simply resent resetting things twice a year, yes. If it hangs at eye level in a hallway, an ordinary quartz clock and thirty seconds of your time twice a year does the same job for less money.
