
A clock that is advertised as silent is not a quieter version of a normal clock. It uses a different gear train, and the difference is easy to hear once you know what you are listening for.
What a standard quartz movement does
A quartz crystal oscillates 32,768 times a second. A divider circuit turns that into one electrical pulse per second, and that pulse advances a stepper motor by one increment. The second hand jumps, stops, jumps again. That stop is the tick — the sound of the gear train arresting and the hand settling.
In a room with a television on you will never hear it. In a bedroom at 3am you will hear nothing else.
What a sweep movement does instead
A sweep — sometimes sold as continuous, silent, or non-ticking — drives the hand through a gear reduction so it moves continuously rather than in steps. There is no arresting, so there is no tick. Most sweep movements are not literally silent: put your ear against the case and you will hear a faint hum from the motor. At arm’s length, they are inaudible.
When it is worth paying for
- Bedrooms and nurseries. The obvious one. A tick that is charming at 8pm is not at 4am.
- Home offices you record or take calls in. A condenser microphone will pick up a tick from across a room, and it is very difficult to remove afterwards.
- Small, hard-surfaced rooms. A tiled bathroom or a galley kitchen amplifies a tick far more than a carpeted living room does.
- Anywhere you work in silence. Some people find a tick focusing. Others find it maddening. You already know which you are.
When the tick is the point
A pendulum clock without an audible beat feels dead. If you are buying a traditional wall or mantel clock, the tick is part of what you are buying, and the pendulum swing on most modern examples is decorative — driven by a quartz movement rather than regulating it.
Two things that surprise people
Sweep movements are not more accurate. Both are regulated by the same kind of quartz crystal. Accuracy is a function of the crystal and the temperature, not of how the hand moves.
Sweep movements can use slightly more power. A continuously driven motor draws more than one that pulses once a second, so expect somewhat shorter battery life — still typically around a year on a good alkaline cell.
Reading the listing
On this site the Movement row on every product page says which you are getting, and you can filter the shop by Movement: Silent sweep to see only the quiet ones. If a listing does not state the movement, that is because the manufacturer did not publish it, and we would rather leave the row off than guess.
